How to save money on your UK home insurance policy

Buying home insurance can be expensive in the UK. The Home Insurance Hub provides advice on how you can lower the cost of your home insurance. Above all, making sure you buy the right cover for your home is the best way to increase the value you receive from your policy.

  • Shop around: Half an hour on the Internet could save you hundreds of pounds. Obtain an instant quote from one of our recomended insurers.

  • Buy online: If you buy your home insurance online many insurers will offer you a discount of up to 20%.

  • Purchase both buildings and contents insurance together: Purchase both buildings and contents insurance at the same time and most insurers will provide a discount.

  • No claim discount: Many home insurers offer a no claim discount if you have a claim free history. The discount will usually increase in line with the number of claim free years.

  • Only buy the cover you need: Look at our step-by-step guide to choosing the right home insurance policy. Over insuring is a waste of money.

  • Increase your excess: You will receive a reduction on the cost of your home insurance policy if you elect a higher excess. This means if you make a claim you will pay a higher amount of the first part of the claim.

  • Single payment: If you can afford to pay your home insurance premium in a single payment you’ll save money. Most insurers charge interest on a home insurance policy if you pay monthly.

  • Don’t pay for cover twice:

    • If you purchase an all risks home insurance policy check you are not paying for the same cover on your travel insurance policy.

    • Most contents insurance policies will provide cover for broken glass in furniture; don’t pay twice by buying the policies that most furniture companies will try to sell you at the time of purchase.

  • Improve security: Improve the security of your home. Many home insurance companies will offer a discount if:

    • You are an active member of a registered Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

    • A burglar alarm is installed. Note that many home insurance companies will only offer a discount if the alarm is installed by a contractor approved by the National Approval Council for Security Systems. In addition, some home insurance companies may require you to have a maintenance contract with a company registered with the National Approval Council for Security Systems.

    • Smoke alarms are installed.

    • All windows have key operated locks.

    • All exit doors are fitted with a British standard approved lock.
